1Y Architects undertook the creation of an art installation for the 2026 Foshan International Cultural & Creative Week. Their design process began with an exploration of daily Cantonese life, seeking a common object that would embody the region's distinctive cultural essence. This search ultimately led them to focus on the ubiquitous red plastic stool.
This endeavor culminated in the 'Stool Tower,' a 36-square-meter installation that re-imagines an ordinary item into a profound cultural symbol. The project by 1Y Architects, with Fan Chang as the lead architect and Yifan Chen credited for the photography, aimed to connect with the local identity of Foshan. It serves as a modern architectural tribute to traditional elements, reflecting how design can elevate the mundane into art.
