Sharge, a brand known for its innovative charging solutions and transparent battery designs, has now introduced a portable solid-state drive that is poised to change the everyday carry landscape. Moving beyond its previous iterations, the Sharge Disk Pro 2 Ultra integrates several functionalities into a compact form factor, making it a highly anticipated gadget for tech enthusiasts.
This device is far more than just an external drive; it functions as a comprehensive USB-C hub and a 4K HDMI dock. It’s engineered to be a versatile companion for a variety of contemporary devices, from laptops and tablets to smartphones, the Steam Deck, and even the Nintendo Switch and its upcoming successor. Adding to its utility, the Disk Pro 2 features built-in MagSafe-compatible magnets, allowing it to securely attach to compatible phones or other surfaces using an included magnetic ring. The compact device provides a 4K 144Hz HDMI 2.1 video output, a 5Gbps USB-A port, dedicated SD and microSD card readers, and USB-C passthrough charging. It also supports up to 8TB of storage with M.2 2280, 2242, or 2230 SSDs, offering extensive expandability. Users can connect various peripherals like external monitors, USB flash drives, and memory cards, transforming their laptop or phone into a more robust workstation. Notably, it enables 4K60 ProRes video recording on iPhones and allows Android phones to display content on an HDMI screen through the integrated SSD.
Despite its impressive array of features, there are a few considerations. The Disk Pro 2 is available in two models: the “Ultra,” which requires 1.5W of USB-C bus power, and the “Lite,” which needs 5W for its more power-intensive components and supports 4K60 over HDMI 2.0. The Ultra model's 3W power limit for connected SSDs can be a bottleneck for high-demand tasks like ProRes recording or large data transfers unless an external power source is connected. Furthermore, while it is compatible with Nintendo Switch consoles, a high-wattage USB-C PD charger (85W or higher for Switch 2) is necessary for docking. The device also exhibits a noticeable delay when connecting to a TV with Nintendo consoles and lacks variable refresh rate (VRR) support for devices like the Steam Deck. Despite these minor issues, the Disk Pro 2 significantly improves upon its predecessors, addressing previous design flaws such as noisy fans, awkwardly recessed ports, and unreliable power buttons. It now features a detachable cable, integrated magnets, and a more efficient cooling system with an optional fan, making it a more refined and practical tool for mobile productivity and entertainment.
The journey of innovation often involves learning from prior iterations, and Sharge's persistence in refining its products exemplifies this principle. By continually enhancing functionality and user experience, manufacturers contribute to a dynamic technological landscape, ultimately empowering users with more efficient and integrated solutions for their diverse needs.
