New Defensive Line Coach Joins Las Vegas Raiders

Instructions

Klint Kubiak, the new head coach for the Las Vegas Raiders, has been actively building his coaching team, notably bringing in Travis Smith as the defensive line coach. Smith's appointment was confirmed by ESPN's Ryan McFadden. His most recent role was with the Tennessee Titans, where he served as the defensive run game coordinator, contributing to their run defense which was ranked 15th in total yards allowed. During his tenure with the Titans, Smith was instrumental in the development of defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons, who achieved his fourth Pro Bowl selection and was named First-Team All-Pro. Before rejoining the Raiders, Smith was also listed as a senior defensive assistant and pass rush specialist on the Titans' official coaching roster.

Smith's career path also includes a stint as the defensive line coach for the Chicago Bears from 2022 to 2024. During this period, he played a crucial role in Montez Sweat's career, helping him earn his first Pro Bowl appearance after Sweat joined the Bears mid-season in 2023. Sweat recorded six sacks and four tackles for loss in nine games under Smith's guidance that season. This new role marks Smith's second time with the Raiders, having previously spent ten seasons with the organization from 2012 to 2021, progressing from a defensive assistant to assistant defensive line coach before his move to Chicago. His return signifies his rich history with the team and his expertise under various head coaches, including Dennis Allen, Tony Sparano, Jack Del Rio, and Rich Bisaccia, making Kubiak the sixth head coach he's worked with for the Silver and Black.

As the 2026 season approaches, Smith faces the challenge of leading a defensive line with considerable potential and some uncertainties. He takes over from Rob Leonard, who is now the defensive coordinator. A key question surrounding the team is the future of star player Maxx Crosby. Beyond Crosby's situation, Smith will focus on nurturing a group of young defensive linemen, including promising talents such as Jonah Laulu, Thomas Booker (a restricted free agent), Tyree Wilson, Tonka Hemingway, and JJ Pegueus. Smith's extensive experience and proven ability to develop talent will be crucial in shaping the Raiders' defensive line into a formidable force for the upcoming season and beyond, contributing to the team's overall success and embodying the spirit of perseverance and teamwork.
