This innovative exhibition, dubbed 'The Paper Log: Shell and Core,' will debut at the Issey Miyake Milan boutique on April 21st, highlighting the brand's commitment to sustainable design practices by transforming waste materials into functional and aesthetic objects.
These distinctive furniture prototypes, encompassing various pieces from seating to tables, are born from the paper waste generated during Issey Miyake's renowned pleating technique. The process involves sandwiching fabric between sheets of paper, which are then heated and pressed to create the brand's iconic sculpted garments. Instead of discarding these paper remnants, head designer Satoshi Kondo envisioned giving them new life. The paper logs undergo a transformation similar to working with timber, involving carving, sawing, and peeling, before being treated with wax or glue to ensure their stability and durability, resulting in each piece possessing a unique, organic aesthetic, often featuring marbled patterns and subtle color imprints from the original textiles.
Beyond the furniture, the exhibition also features a series of pleated sculptures developed in collaboration with Spanish architecture firm Ensamble Studio.
