The Hagerstown PONY-13 All-Stars commenced their World Series journey in Carlsbad, California, with a challenging match against the Placentia Punishers on Friday, July 31st. Despite establishing an initial lead, Hagerstown ultimately succumbed to a resilient Placentia team, losing the contest 9-7.
Hagerstown initially took control, scoring the first run in the opening inning through Carter Curfman's RBI single. After Placentia tied the score, Hagerstown surged ahead in the second inning, plating four runs. Cody Kelley delivered a two-run double, followed by RBI doubles from Gunnar Burton and Curfman, extending their lead to 5-1. However, Placentia mounted a comeback, reducing the deficit to 5-4. Hagerstown responded in the fourth with an RBI single from Burton and an RBI double from Ethan Allen, pushing their lead to 7-4. Nevertheless, Placentia capitalized on subsequent opportunities, scoring two runs in the bottom of the fourth and another pair in the fifth, including Finn Knapp's RBI double, to take an 8-7 lead. The Punishers secured an insurance run in the sixth inning.
Placentia's victory was cemented by the stellar relief pitching of Cole Petler and Jeremiah Peterson, who collectively held Hagerstown scoreless for the final 3 2/3 innings, with Peterson striking out four over the last two innings. For Hagerstown, Kelley was a standout performer, going 3-for-5 with two doubles, while Burton, Curfman, and Allen each contributed two hits. With this loss, Hagerstown now faces an elimination game scheduled for Saturday, August 1st, at 1 p.m. Eastern Time, as they strive to continue their World Series campaign.
