2s.design, an industrial design studio based in Warsaw, has unveiled Equihero, a revolutionary line of inhalation masks meticulously crafted to meet the physiological and behavioral demands of horses undergoing respiratory therapy. Embracing a 'More-Than-Human Design' philosophy, this initiative pivots from conventional human-centric usability to prioritize animal well-being. The creation process integrated sophisticated digital modeling, comprehensive veterinary research, and a series of iterative prototypes, culminating in a nebulization system that significantly reduces stress for equine patients.
The genesis of this innovation stemmed from a firsthand experience by the studio's founders, who faced challenges in treating their own horse's respiratory condition. They observed that existing market solutions were either prohibitively expensive, intricate veterinary apparatuses, or rudimentary alternatives that caused distress to the animals. Equihero emerged as a direct response to this unmet need, aiming to develop veterinary equipment that seamlessly aligns with the unique anatomy and natural behavior of horses.
The design approach by 2s.design meticulously addresses the dual requirements of the horse—a sensitive and easily agitated patient—and the caretaker, who needs an efficient and dependable system for administering treatment. To accurately capture the intricate cranial structure of horses, the team initiated their design phase by utilizing a digital equine phantom. This allowed for an in-depth analysis of anatomical relationships and facilitated the exploration of four distinct design concepts.
Following the digital conceptualization, the studio partnered with veterinary professionals to rigorously evaluate these concepts in authentic stable environments. Initial prototypes, fabricated using 3D printing technology, were tested on live horses to confirm optimal proportions and fit. Subsequently, transparent resin prototypes were developed, enabling direct observation of respiratory patterns within the masks. This iterative testing process was crucial for assessing seal pressure, nostril movement, and overall comfort during inhalation. The final design of Equihero incorporates numerous micro-ergonomic enhancements derived from these trials. For instance, the straps are strategically placed to alleviate pressure on the sensitive occipital region, and emergency magnetic clips are integrated for swift release in the event of sudden equine movements.
Equihero represents a harmonious fusion of medical efficacy and an aesthetic language attuned to the equestrian world. Its sleek profile features subtle embossed details on the sides, enhancing structural definition, while the color palette draws inspiration from nature, utilizing earthy tones such as sand, peat, clay, and charcoal. The outcome is a design that successfully marries clinical functionality with a visually appealing and comforting presence, firmly establishing the inhalation mask as an essential piece of veterinary equipment thoughtfully designed with the horse's anatomy and experience at its core.
