A fresh and innovative rendition of the Czech Republic's foundational legal document has been unveiled, thanks to the collaborative efforts of graphic designer Ondřej Báchor, paper artist Matěj Činčera, and typographer Jan Novák. This talented trio emerged victorious in a design competition, leading to a contemporary transformation that respects historical roots while embracing modern artistic expression. Their work is a testament to the seamless integration of traditional bookmaking techniques with cutting-edge design principles.
The centerpiece of this redesigned constitution is a distinctive motif inspired by the national coat of arms. This emblem, featuring a pair of two-tailed lions and two eagles symbolizing various regions of the Czech Republic, is meticulously integrated into the book's structure. It functions not only as an aesthetic element but also as a symbolic guardian of Czech democratic ideals. The emblem is rendered in a sophisticated relief, achieved through precise layering of paper, offering a contemporary interpretation of a revered national symbol. Furthermore, the design incorporates the national colors—blue, red, and white—with blue prominently featured to convey stability and dignity. A practical innovation allows for the easy removal and replacement of the book's inner block, accommodating future constitutional amendments. Each page also subtly features a background relief print of the emblem, visible only from specific angles, adding an intricate layer of detail.
The project culminates in the creation of a unique typeface named Democratia, specifically crafted for this edition of the constitution. Drawing inspiration from the calligraphic styles prevalent in the 1920s constitution, this new font balances readability with a distinctive character, merging ceremonial elegance with a civil appeal. This remarkable endeavor, celebrated by the Czech Grand Design Award 2026, sets a precedent for the application of contemporary design in official state documents. Plans are also underway to introduce a more accessible, civilian version of this ceremonial book, fostering a broader connection between the public and their nation's foundational principles. This initiative beautifully demonstrates how art and design can elevate the presentation of significant national heritage, making it both visually compelling and deeply meaningful for all citizens.
