ClassiCon's Soft Stone Sofa: A Fusion of Sculpture and Architecture by Gabriel Tan

Instructions

ClassiCon, a German design house, has introduced the Soft Stone sofa, a collaborative creation with Singaporean designer Gabriel Tan. This modular seating system, distinguished by its gently rounded corners, draws inspiration from both sculptural art and architectural design. Comprising eleven distinct modules, the sofa aims to blend the solidity of monumental structures with a natural, inviting softness, making it a versatile addition to modern living spaces.

The conceptual foundation for the Soft Stone sofa is rich and varied. Tan's design vision was significantly influenced by the tiered stone terraces found in Porto's Parque da Cidade, as well as the distinctive works of American sculptor Isamu Noguchi. Specifically, Noguchi's 1970 piece, "Illusion of the Fifth Stone," which showcases interconnected, rounded solid rocks, served as a key reference. This artistic inspiration is evident in the sofa's armrests, which seamlessly integrate with the backrest, mimicking the way Noguchi's stones interlock to form a unified whole.

Tan articulated his design philosophy, stating his desire to encapsulate the sensation of relaxing on something substantial and grand, yet simultaneously comforting and pliable. This objective led to the sofa's unique balance of robust geometry and tactile softness. The deliberate folds incorporated into the upholstery further enhance this aesthetic, breaking away from traditional rigid lines and imparting an "Italian nonchalance" that underscores its luxurious and inviting character, making its softness immediately apparent.

For the upholstery, ClassiCon and Tan partnered with another esteemed German brand, Zimmer + Rohde. They curated a selection of four premium fabrics from Zimmer + Rohde's collection. These include Tinto, known for its finish that evokes the appearance of a wet stone drying under the sun; Pamir RE, a bouclé-textured option; Chenille Andro Plus, a two-tone fabric with a subtle sheen; and Antoni, a neutral linen. For those seeking bespoke options, custom upholstery fabrics and leather covers are also available, allowing for further personalization of this sophisticated piece.

The Soft Stone sofa embodies a harmonious synthesis of artistic vision and functional design. It reflects a thoughtful approach to furniture creation, where natural elements and sculptural forms converge to offer a seating solution that is both visually captivating and exceptionally comfortable. The collaboration between ClassiCon and Gabriel Tan, alongside Zimmer + Rohde, highlights a commitment to craftsmanship and innovative design, producing a piece that stands out in the contemporary furniture landscape.
